General Information

   The Old South Marching Festival and Competition is a GMEA approved event that is recognized as one of the top events for high school bands, and we expect this year’s festival and competition to be the best ever. 

  The Old South Marching Festival and Competition always draws the top bands and the competition level is of the highest caliber.  The Festival portion utilizes “Olympic” style judging, and only rating will be given. The Competition portion utilizes “Caption style” judging.

  In order to hold a quality competition, we are limiting the field to 30 bands.  These will be admitted on a first come—first serve basis. 

Applications must be postmarked  and Performance Bond Received no later than Friday, October 19, 2007.

Registration

The registration fee is $75 per band per event.  In addition to the registration fee, each Georgia band must submit a $500 performance bond.  This performance bond should be submitted with your application as a separate check, which will be returned on the day of your performance. 

Registration fees must be submitted at time of registration. 

Both checks should be made payable to and submitted, with the completed application to:

Classification

Classification will be determined by the number of wind instrument players, not including percussion, in each band. 

Class A:................1-40

Class AA:.............41-59

Class AAA:...........60-79

Class AAAA:.........80-100

Class AAAAA: ......101+

Bands may enter a higher classification than determined by numbers, but not a lower class. 

Adjudication

Caption judging will be as follows:  2 Music Performance judges; 1 Music Effect judge; 2 Visual Performance judges; 1 Visual Effect Judge; 1 for each Auxiliary (Percussion, Color Guard, Drum Major; Majorette/Dance Team)

Awards

 

I.  Festival Format: 

Trophies and Plaques will be awarded to all bands receiving superior ratings, including all auxiliary areas.

 

II.  Contest Format: 

All bands, drum major, color guards, percussion, majorettes, and drill teams will receive a division rating based on the following scale. 

  Superior:       85.0-100; 

  Excellent:      70.0-84.9;

  Average:       55.0-69.9;         

  Fair:               0.00-54.9

Plaques and Trophies will be awarded as follows:

 

Rating Plaques: 

All bands and auxiliary units receiving superior ratings only.

 

Trophies in each class:

Band:  1st, 2nd and 3rd places

Auxiliary:  1st, 2nd and 3rd places

High Visual, High Music, and High General Effect: will be awarded to the bands who receive the highest overall Visual, Music and General Effect scores regardless of class.

Grand Champion

The Old South Trophy will be awarded to the band with the highest overall band score regardless of class.
